Ask an Artist: Interview with Jenny Aitken ARSMA
Season 6, Episode 16: Interview with Jenny Aitken
In this episode Peter and Tom interview artist Jenny Aitken, one of the UK's most successful oil painters working today. Jenny is a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, exhibits her work nationally and internationally, has won numerous awards and regularly teaches, both in-person and online.
In the first part of the episode, Jenny discusses her journey into the art world, from an early interest through to studying at university, a job in graphic design and her first solo exhibition. She shares some of her highs and lows, discussing how she has approached the challenges, opportunities and decisions. This first section is absolutely packed with relatable, practical advice from Jenny.
After the break, Jenny talks a little more about her new book, “Painting into the Light”, published by SearchPress and out now. Jenny shares her reasons for wanting to write a book and the sections she is most proud of.
This week’s takeaway…Jenny concludes with some advice she would pass on to others starting out on their artistic career; connect. Talk to people. Connect with fellow artists and discover your business community. This will help you in numerous ways, whether it be gaining advice from people who have “been there, done that”, opening doors to opportunities, sparking conversations, or inspiring you. There is no “one-size-fits-all” with an art career and these connections will help you to build your arty job in the way you want to build it.
