Discussed in this episode…
How going to art school can sometimes lead to an artistic job. However, prepare yourself to be tried and tested - not everyone will like what you do!
Be determined and driven to find out the information and training you’re looking for - it won’t be handed to you on a plate…even at art school!
Work small and local. Peter said ‘yes’ to many different opportunities from painting pets (something he hates) to doing free charity events. Some how, something always came from doing them.
Finding a community. When Peter moved to a new area, he started by finding out where the local art studios, shops and centers were, and thus where the artists hung out!
Keep that normal job, and see if you can make that job relateable to your art. Peter took jobs in the education sector giving him valuable experience in teaching as the same time as giving him artistic time during all those school holidays!
The Takeaway…
It is possible to go to art school and become an artist…no matter what your parents may say! You’ll have to be thirsty though to work hard in developing both your artistic practice and career by identifying the people who can help you achieve it.
