Ask an Artist: Selling Strategies

Ask an Artist: Selling Strategies

Season 6, Episode 7: Selling Strategies

In this episode Peter and Tom talk about strategies for selling your artwork. The ways in which Artists sell their work can be numerous, difficult and confusing.

In the first half of the episode, they both agree that having at least several selling platforms is a strategy they both employ and one which works for them. They discuss working with galleries, working to commission and raise interesting points about business mindset and long term vs short term goals. They also talk about pricing and knowing, finding and accessing your audience.

In the second part, they talk about the power still held by selling face-to-face and the interest and value Artists have by being themselves. Building relationships, telling a story and turning buyers into collectors are all strong sales techniques. Peter and Tom also discuss how buying art is quite often not a planned thing and how you may want to use payment plans and the “puppy-dog technique” to help you and the customer.

This week’s takeaway… whilst there are lots of ways to sell your work, selling in-person is still a strong way for us Artists because we are a part of the story and stories sell. It’s a good place to start and as your business grows, having several additional avenues will also be beneficial. When it comes to pricing, communication, clarity, openness and flexibility are key and do remember to review what works and what doesn’t, helping you to focus your efforts in the right place for next time.
